What is the earliest known New Orleans shotgun era?
The New Orleans HDLC dates the earliest known local examples to at least the 1830s. Archival research also identifies linear cottages built before 1840, while the precise relationship between those prototypes and later shotguns remains part of the scholarly debate.
Survival dates and origin dates are different. Fire, storms, redevelopment and ordinary replacement removed many early buildings, so the oldest house still standing cannot by itself identify the first use of the form.

How do you date one shotgun house?
Date one house by combining records rather than choosing the oldest visible feature. Start with title and notarial records, Sanborn maps, assessor information, historic surveys, permits and dated photographs.
Then compare framing, roof form, siding, windows and additions with the documentary sequence. A replaced facade can look new on an old frame, while salvaged doors can make a newer addition appear older.
