01 / Choose your comparison

Two neighborhoods. Your priorities.

What matters for your next home?

These are preferences for your worksheet. They do not filter live listings or establish what is available within a neighborhood.

02 / Start with the documented context

What the guides tell us.

These descriptions summarize the historic and architectural sources already cited in each guide. They describe recorded building patterns, not current listings or the characteristics of every house.

Building context

Tremé

One-story shotgun residences are common throughout the district. The area above North Claiborne is documented as having late-nineteenth-century shotgun cottages as its dominant house type.

Bywater

City guidance identifies single and double shotguns as the most common building types in the district. Most residences are described as one-story wood-frame buildings with gabled or hipped roofs.

Area & boundary context

Tremé

The official boundary follows portions of North Rampart, St. Bernard, North Claiborne, Esplanade, North Broad, Orleans, North Villere and St. Philip. Because it is irregular, a simplified neighborhood label is not precise enough for designation research.

Bywater

The official historic-district boundary runs roughly from the Mississippi River between Press Street and Poland Avenue, with an irregular lakeside edge around St. Claude Avenue. Use the City's map for the exact parcel rather than treating every property marketed as Bywater as part of the same boundary.

Question for your visit

Tremé

Does the present plan still function as the original cottage or double? Check additions, room connections and the documented number of units.

Bywater

For a narrow-lot single or double, how do front-to-back circulation, outdoor access and the present unit arrangement work for you?

03 / Check the actual property

Bring the comparison down to the address.

Record the property, source and date for each observation. Include what still needs checking. Avoid private owner or buyer information.

Room layout & privacy

Walk the route between bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces. Which rooms must you pass through?

Parking & vehicle access

Check the exact property's parking, driveway access and curb signs at the times you would use them. Record what is confirmed.

Daily trips & transit

Test your actual journey to work, shops and other regular destinations at your usual times. Check current RTA service.

Parking, travel times, access, insurance and current use need property-specific evidence. This worksheet does not rank neighborhoods or treat unanswered questions as a match.

Put the areas in context.

Use the regional map for orientation, or the neighborhood map links above to search an area. Confirm exact neighborhood, district and parcel boundaries with the City.

Load an interactive map from OpenStreetMap. The map shows the area, not homes for sale or official district boundaries.
