Two neighborhoods. Your priorities.
These are preferences for your worksheet. They do not filter live listings or establish what is available within a neighborhood.
02 / Start with the documented context
What the guides tell us.
These descriptions summarize the historic and architectural sources already cited in each guide. They describe recorded building patterns, not current listings or the characteristics of every house.
Building context
Uptown
The district contains single and double shotguns, camelbacks and sidehall forms rather than one uniform plan. The official record describes substantial nineteenth-century examples alongside later houses.
Bywater
City guidance identifies single and double shotguns as the most common building types in the district. Most residences are described as one-story wood-frame buildings with gabled or hipped roofs.
Area & boundary context
Uptown
Uptown is a very large historic district, and common use of the word Uptown can be broader or narrower than an official boundary. City guidance notes that earlier building types tend to occur closer to the river and in earlier-developed portions, while later forms appear farther inland and upriver.
Bywater
The official historic-district boundary runs roughly from the Mississippi River between Press Street and Poland Avenue, with an irregular lakeside edge around St. Claude Avenue. Use the City's map for the exact parcel rather than treating every property marketed as Bywater as part of the same boundary.
Question for your visit
Uptown
Which exact part of Uptown is being compared? Keep the block, building type, layout and condition consistent before comparing prices.
Bywater
For a narrow-lot single or double, how do front-to-back circulation, outdoor access and the present unit arrangement work for you?
